Assignment: Draft an Inclusive and Sustainable Assessment

In this assignment, you will build an inclusive and sustainable assessment. It might be useful to think about a larger, higher-stakes assessment and how you will build it into the students' experience throughout the course. Use the principles of sustainability and inclusion to reflect upon your planned format and the students' experience. Remember, these principles depend on more than the characteristics of the assessments themselves, but how you introduce them to students and scaffold their success.  Consider using the transparent design as a framework -  clarifying the purpose, the task and the criteria of success.  As you create the assignment, plan how you will introduce it to students, provide feedback, and connect it to a grade. We offer the following questions to guide your thinking.

• In what ways will this assessment be inclusive?
  • How will you introduce the purpose of the assessment, the tasks students will need to perform, and the criteria by which they will be judged?
  • How will students receive feedback to support their learning and improve their performance? Will there be small components of the assessment that students will complete over time?  
  • Are there opportunities for students to leverage their strengths and express their learning in varied modes and modalities?
• How will this assessment support students in their ability to monitor and guide their own future learning?
  • Will there be a rubric or other guide for students to self-assess their work?
  • Are there opportunities for peer feedback?
• Are students prompted to identify gaps in their understandings?
